What’s Washi Tape?
Washi tapes are decorative tapes that are made out of rice paper. Originally created in Japan, washi tape was not intended to be used as a crafting item. Instead, the purpose of washi tape, initially named MT (masking tape), was to create a kind of tape that was adhesive but also easy to remove from items.
Later, after being surprised by a group of women who created beautiful arts from washi tape, the company decided to produce a new type of MT tape for crafting. That’s the washi tape we often use for our diamond painting at the moment.

1. Protect Your Canvas Edges.
Washi tape works great around the edges that is sticky but doesn’t get drills. It helps to protect the canvas from dust and dirt, especially when you have furry babies that insist they are helping you. After finishing the whole painting and getting ready to frame it, just gently remove it and cut it down for sealing/framing.
2. Section Off Your Canvas.
Most diamond art painters like to use washi tape to create a square grid on this top cover so they can work on the design by sections while keeping the canvas protected. As each section of the painting is completed, diamond painters remove the washi tape and protective covering for that part.
Because washi tape is designed to be removed from surfaces easily, it won’t impact the covering, adhesive or canvas quality as you continue to work. This is one of the main reasons why washi tape is so widely used by diamond painters besides the fun, cute, colorful designs.
One other reason is that it may bring you motivation to finish your project section by section. Without the sections, it just seems like it is going to take forever.
3. Make a Decorative Frame.
Once you’ve finished a project, you might be wondering how to cover the excess legend on the edge as well as how to display your work. Well, you can keep up your creativity by creating a beautiful washi tape frame around the design. We do recommend using a real picture frame around the finished project to keep dust and dirt away, but before you seal it into its frame, get creative with your washi tape.
Find a pattern or colors that match the design of your painting and start to tape around the white edges. If there’s too much white left on your canvas, you can use scissors to trim it down. Once you’ve created your decorative frame, slide your completed project into a glass frame and find the perfect place to hang it in your home!
4. Decorate Your Diamond Painting Accessories.
You don’t have to restrict yourself to using your washi tape only to protect the diamond painting. Most diamond painters have an abundance of diamond painting accessories and gadgets, so how about making it one-of-a-kind by adding your favorite patterns and colors of washi tape?
You can also use washi tape to decorate your portfolio or even your drill storage box and make it uniquely yours. If you’re feeling really creative, you can even use washi tape to make picture frames on the walls of your crafting room or other areas of your home.
